SALISBURY — Neplus Hall spent five years working as a dental assistant before going back to school to become a hygienist.

It’s a decision she’s never regretted once in the last 33 years.

“It’s is a wonderful career,” she said. “It offers many, many opportunities because you are not just dealing with oral care, you’re dealing with the whole person.”

Dental hygienist tops the list of fastest growing occupations in the country compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It’s expected to grow by 36 percent by 2018.

Ms. Hall goes on to describe what she herself finds particularly rewarding about her chosen career as a Dental Hygienist.

Hall said one of the best things about her job is getting to interact with different people every day.

“You have to be a people person,” she said. “You have to care about people.”

Hall said dexterity is also an important skill to have to be able to perform the clinical work.

And Hall said the work has its challenges.

“It’s hard, intricate work,” she said.

Hall said she would encourage those who are considering such a career to work as a dental assistant first.

“That way they can see if it’s an area that they would like to pursue before they make an investment,” she said.

And so with a very good median income, increased demand for those who are trained and licensed Dental Hygienists and a projected increase of 36% by 2018, you can see why becoming a Dental Hygienist Tops The List For Fasting Growing Occupations.

Tooth decay?

Is it true that when your 2 gum teeth did decay, the rest of your teeth will fall out in the next 1-3 years?

Tooth decay?

How often would someone have to vomit before it would damage their teeth?

About 7 years ago I went through a short spell of making myself sick after eating. It was only for a couple of months, and I would only do it once a week, maximum twice, but that would be unusual.

Although I hadn’t seen a dentist for 10 years I thought I took reasonably good care of my teeth, and was shocked to find out recently that I now need nine fillings and all my wisdom teeth extracted due to decay. I was just wondering if my very short spell of vomiting could have caused all the cavities I have now? Or is it more likely that I just haven’t taken good enough care of my teeth and eaten too much sugar over the past 10 years?

I have just finished my first semester in nursing school and did not enjoy it at all. So I am thinking about transferring into a dental hygiene program before I go too far in my nursing career. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was hard to get a job as a dental hygienist and what would help me get in to a good dental office. I am thinking about going to school to be a dental assistant first and was wondering if that will be hard to find a job in as well. Thank you!

Is dental hygienist a good job?

I am 20 years old, and trying to figure out what to do with my life. I have thought about Dental Assistant and Dental Hygienist jobs. But, I have a couple questions about this field of work.

1. What type of degrees are necessary?
2. Would it be better to become a dental assistant first, then work toward dental hygienist?
3. Do people with really (not to be mean) nasty teeth come in frequently? How do you deal with this?
4. How is job security and salary (does salary increase?)?

I’m sure I’ll think of other questions later, but if you can answer those and maybe just give any advice or thoughts on the subject that you think are important to this field. Thank you!!

Jobs similar to dental hygienist?

I often hear how a dental hygienist is the ideal job for people who want to work in health care, want to make a good amount of money per hour and want a flexible schedule with good benefits. Unfortunately for me, the idea of cleaning people’s teeth is too disgusting and disturbing for me. Are there any jobs or careers that are similar to dental hygiene with similar benefits, require a similar level of education and similar flexibility?
I hate hate hate radiology tech. My uncle was one for 30 years and kept trying to convince me to get into it but that just made me hate it even more, but thanks anyway.
